How to calculate exam percentage

An exam percentage expresses your marks obtained as a portion of the maximum marks, out of 100: percentage = (marks ÷ maximum) × 100. For an overall result across several subjects, total all the marks obtained and divide by the total maximum.

Real-world example

Score 76 out of 90 and your percentage is (76 ÷ 90) × 100 = 84.4%. Across five subjects scoring 78, 85, 69, 92 and 81 out of 100 each, the aggregate is 405 ÷ 500 × 100 = 81%.

Weighted results

If components carry different weights — say finals 70% and coursework 30% — multiply each percentage by its weight and add them: 80% in finals and 90% in coursework gives (80 × 0.7) + (90 × 0.3) = 83%.

Frequently asked questions

Divide the marks obtained by the maximum marks and multiply by 100. For 76 out of 90: (76 ÷ 90) × 100 = 84.4%.

Add all the marks obtained and all the maximum marks, divide the totals, and multiply by 100. For 405 out of 500: 81%.

Only if every subject has the same maximum and equal weight. Otherwise total the marks and maximums, or apply weights.
