GST in India

India's Goods and Services Tax replaced a tangle of older indirect taxes with a single, slab-based system. The common rates are 0%, 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%. For a sale within a state the tax splits equally into CGST (central) and SGST (state); for a sale across states it is charged as a single IGST.

Add vs remove GST

To add GST to a base price, multiply by the rate and add it on. To remove GST from an inclusive price (like an MRP), divide by (100 + rate) and multiply by 100 — you cannot simply subtract the percentage, because the tax was charged on the smaller base amount.

Real-world example

A consultant in Maharashtra bills a Maharashtra client ₹50,000 at 18%. GST is ₹9,000, split as CGST ₹4,500 + SGST ₹4,500, for an invoice total of ₹59,000. Reversing an inclusive ₹2,360 at 18% gives a base of ₹2,000 and ₹360 GST.

The common GST rate slabs are 0%, 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%, with an additional compensation cess on some luxury and sin goods.

For sales within a state, GST splits equally into CGST (central) and SGST (state). For sales between states, the entire tax is charged as a single IGST.

Divide the inclusive price by (100 + rate) and multiply by 100. For an 18% inclusive ₹1,180: 1,180 × 100 / 118 = ₹1,000 base, with ₹180 GST.
