Why convert WebP to PNG?

WebP is excellent for the web — it produces small, fast-loading images — but it is not yet supported everywhere outside the browser. Some desktop image editors, older operating systems, document tools and third-party apps still cannot open a .webp file. PNG (Portable Network Graphics), by contrast, is one of the most universally supported image formats in existence: practically every program on every platform can open it. Converting WebP to PNG gives you an image you can use anywhere — in design software, presentations, print workflows, or any application that does not understand WebP.

This converter decodes your WebP file and re-encodes it as a lossless PNG on our server using GD or ImageMagick, keeping any transparency intact. Because PNG is lossless, the resulting image preserves full visual quality with no additional compression artefacts introduced during the conversion.

WebP and PNG compared

WebP is a modern format optimised for small file size and fast delivery on the web, supporting both lossy and lossless compression plus transparency and animation. PNG is an older, lossless-only format prized for its universal compatibility and perfect fidelity. When you convert from WebP to PNG you are trading a smaller file for maximum compatibility: the PNG will usually be larger than the WebP, but it will open in any program and never lose a pixel.

One thing to note: if your source WebP was created with lossy compression, the detail that was discarded when it was first made cannot be recovered — converting to PNG simply preserves the WebP as it is now, at full quality, in a universally readable container. Transparency is carried over faithfully, so logos and graphics with transparent backgrounds convert cleanly.

What about animated WebP?

WebP supports animation, similar to GIF. PNG is a still-image format (animation requires the separate APNG variant), so when an animated WebP is converted to PNG you get a single still frame rather than a moving image. For ordinary photos, logos, screenshots and graphics — the vast majority of WebP files — this is not a concern, and the conversion is a perfect, lossless copy.

Common use cases

  • Editing in desktop software. Open the image in editors or tools that do not yet support WebP.
  • Compatibility. Share an image with someone whose device or app cannot read WebP.
  • Transparency-safe graphics. Keep transparent backgrounds when moving logos and icons into other tools.
  • Print and documents. Many print and office workflows expect PNG rather than WebP.
  • Archiving. Store a lossless, widely compatible copy of an image.

To convert, upload your WebP file, click convert, and download a ready-to-use PNG.
